A11ykit Annotation Wizard
A Figma plugin that turns complex WCAG guidance into a guided annotation workflow, removing the hesitation designers feel when it’s time to annotate.
Overview
Even with A11ykit, annotating a design meant knowing which annotation to use, and when.
The Annotation Wizard removes that hesitation with automation. It walks designers through annotating their work and communicating accessibility requirements to engineers, turning WCAG guidance into a repeatable annotation language so accessible handoff feels natural from the start.
My part
Laurie, an engineer, led the plugin’s design and development, and I supported her by updating the A11ykit 1.5 annotation library it builds on. It’s an example of an engineer and a designer working as one team, each supporting the other across design and development. I made sure the 1.5 annotations worked with Laurie’s code, tested and iterated with her whenever something broke, and shipped the library alongside the plugin, demoing both to design leadership.

The ideaDesigners want their work to be accessible, but annotating it is hard. Pairing A11ykit with a Figma plugin makes that part easier.
-
In practice
For an icon-only button, the designer types its accessible name into the wizard, and the wizard adds it to the annotation on the design.
